International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) on August 31, is the worlds largest campaign to end overdose, remember those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of family and friends left behind. The campaign aims to raise awareness of overdose and stimulate action and discussion of evidenced based overdose prevention programs and drug policy. IOAD was initiated in 2001 by Sally J. Finn at The Salvation Army in St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia. Since 2012, IOAD has been coordinated by the not-for-profit Australian public health organization Penington Institute.

The Commonwealth Prevention Alliance (CPA) through a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD), is initiating a media campaign to promote IOAD throughout Pennsylvania.

Using the PA Stop initiative, CPA has created Pennsylvania-specific IOAD messaging tools for any SCA, prevention provider, or coalition use freely this year,  up to and including any commemorative efforts on August 31.

Please review the items below and consider using them in your community and on your social media platforms. We’re happy to help any group with these materials. If you have any questions, please fill out the Media Request Form and a team member will get back to you ASAP.

SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS

Currently there are two types of social media post themes: “Faces” and “Text”. These are approved by PCCD to be used as is on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. To get accompanying textual content, please use the Social Media Content Calendar above. There are only square formatted posts this year. If you’re looking for more vertical imagery to use in Reels or Stories, simply add some color bars above or below the squares to create your own design.

To use these image assets for your posts,  right click and “save as” and download them to your computer or device and use them in your social media (on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, TikTok  etc.).

VIDEO PSA

There are two ways to share the video PSA. The first, recommended way is to simply share from YouTube just as you would any other video on social media. The second option is intended only for platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where you must upload a media clip to share video. Please only download and use the second option for those platforms. If you can share the video using the YouTube version as much as possible, it will allow for better evaluation of the campaign.
